Twenty questions, six minutes
Five questions per level, from greetings to the particles nobody prints in a textbook. You get no feedback while you answer, and every explanation at the end. Nothing is sent anywhere and there is no account to create.
We would rather put you one level too low than have you quit at lesson three.
How the placing works
The test has 20 questions split into four blocks of 5, one block per level. Clear 4 out of 5 in a block and you move up. The level you land on is the first block you don't clear, which is where the gaps are and where the lessons will be useful.
That places some people a level below where they feel they are, and it's on purpose. A learner who starts one level too low reads three easy pages and moves on. A learner who starts one level too high hits the affix system on day two and closes the tab.
What the four levels mean here
A1 · Beginner
Greetings, numbers, ordering food, and saying no with the right word. You can hold the opening thirty seconds of a conversation and read a menu.
A2 · Elementary
Getting around, past and future through sudah and akan, shopping, bargaining. You can ask for something and understand the answer if it comes slowly.
B1 · Intermediate
The affix system, which is the only part of Indonesian that takes real work. Opinions, telling a story, and the gap between the language of forms and the language of friends.
B2 · Advanced
News, idiom, and the particles that carry the tone: sih, dong, kok, lah. This is the level where you stop translating in your head.
Why half the questions are about register
There are two Indonesians. The one in textbooks says Apakah Anda mau minum sesuatu? and the one in the street says Mau minum?. A test that only checks the first will tell you you're intermediate and leave you unable to follow a conversation between two Indonesians. From B1 on, the questions ask which register you're in.
Your result stays in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, and clearing your browser data clears it.
